Annapolis, MD (July 24, 2016) – Doug Smith, president, and Linda Barbour, executive director, both of STAIR (Start The Adventure In Reading), accepted a $7,000 check from Mimi Jones, committee chairman of the Rotary Club of Annapolis Foundation, at a club luncheon meeting.

STAIR is targeted at city and county second grade students identified by teachers as underachievers in reading skills. A volunteer works one-on-one with a student two times each week, encouraging the student to want to read using various creative approaches to learning to read. If students cannot read in second grade, they usually become lost in the education process.

In addition, the club’s foundation also presented a $4,000 check to Carol McCurdy, executive director of the 21st Century Education Foundation. The funds will be used for the Digital Classroom Project, a program at aids teachers and students in county schools. A charging unit and cart support 12-15 Google Chrome books that are used for teaching all subjects and are in use throughout the entire school day.
